The Kenyan Premier League secretariat has released the latest version of the KPL standings and Gor Mahia currently lead the log with 41 points after 21 matches. This comes just days after FKF announced that Gor Mahia be awarded the three points of the abandoned Sony Sugar match overruling a previous replay decision by KPL.
FKF ruling will put Gor Mahia on 44 points, 9 ahead of second placed Sofapaka who have 35 points from 22 matches.
According to Football Kenya Federation, Sony sugar were guilty of causing the match abandonment and therefore they ruled that the match be awarded to Gor Mahia while a statement by KPL released on September 3rd read that, “In accordance to the Rules of Kenyan Football, Rule 3.4 on Responsibilities of clubs and Rule3.7 on Abandoned matches, the match reports exonerates both teams from causing the abandonment.
However, the match reports do confirm that the players were ready to resume play but due to the collapsed perimeter fence which enabled so many spectators of both sides inside the playing area, posing serious security risk to the playing units, match officials and technical benches, the match officials resolved to call off the match.”
The match in question was abandoned in the 85th minute after controversy surrounded David Owino’s equalizer with Sony Sugar players and officials claiming the ball never crossed the line.
