KPL champions Tusker FC on Wednesday suffered their first defeat of the
season when they fell to Western Stima at the Bukhungu stadium in
Kakamega.A ten man Tusker had an opportunity to make it one all in the
second period but defender Noah Abich blew away an open chance from the
penalty spot after his spot kick was punched out by custodian Elassiba Benga
following a foul by Robert Kwaye in the 76th minute.
Stima’s lone goal was netted by new signing Nelson Simwa who joined the
Western based outfit from West Kenya Sugar.Simwa slotted home a
re-bound ball in the 70th minute after goal keeper Boniface Olouch
failed to hold on the ball following a heavy shot from lethal striker
Wesley Kemboi.
Tusker were reduced to ten men in the second period when Isaac Otieno
hacked down a goal bound Fred Shimonyo and Tusker coach Sammy Omollo was
forced to shift his playing formation and as such affecting his attack.
“The red card distorted our game plan but this is football, You have to accept defeat.” Said Coach Omollo.
The win left coach Omino who had a poor end of season last year
optimistic of a great season ahead after gathering four points from two
matches. Stima drew their opening match against debutants Muhoroni youth
in their opening fixture.
“This is a great start for us in the league and am happy the boys fought
out hard especially in the second half. We now need to maintain the
tempo to be assured of a good finish at the end of the season. Starting
well builds up a good season and am excited with the results considering
we have downed not only another team but the champions Tusker.” Said an
elated Omino.
