Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC will this weekend take on Mozambiquan club
Ferroviario in the CAF Confederations Cup. The first leg match will be
played in Maputo on Saturday afternoon.
Ferroviário was founded
in 1924, as Clube Ferroviário de Lourenço-Marques. In 1976, the club was
renamed to Clube Ferroviário de Maputo. In 1982, it won its first two
titles, the Cup of Mozambique, and the Mozambican League. After winning
the Moçambola (Mozambican Premier League) in 2008 and in 2009, they
finished in the fifth position in the 2011 season.
Playing
against Gor Mahia will be their third time participating in the
Confederations Cup having participated in 2004 for their first time
reaching the preliminary rounds and in 2005 reaching the First round.
They
have participated in the CAF Cup winners Cup once, in 1994, reaching
the First round. Their best performance in a continental showpiece has
been in the CAF Cup having reached the Semis in 1992. They have
previously reached; 1st round in 1993, Second round in 1994, Quarters in
1995, Second round in 1996, Quarter finals in 2001 and First round in
2002.
In the just concluded season of the Mocambola, after 26
rounds of matches, they finished in fifth place, a massive 24 points
behind winners Liga Mulcumana who were on 61 points. Their form in the
last five league matches has been LDWLW.
Their record for the
just concluded league was 10 Wins, Seven Draws and Nine losses. They
identified their home ground as their fortress only losing three matches
at their backyard. They won seven and drew three. However, they managed
their biggest victory (4-1) away while also their biggest loss (2-0)
was suffered away from home.
They have two players in the
national team; Francisco “Whiskey” Masinga, a 25 year old defender who
has 18 caps for the national team. The other one is Momed Hagi, a 26
year old Midfielder with 20 caps for the national team.
They won
the Taça de Moçambique in the same year, after they defeated Chingale de
Tete in the final. It plays their home matches at Estádio da Machava,
which has a maximum sitting capacity of 45,000.
They have won the
Mocambola Nine times; 1982, 1989, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008,
2009, Cup Of Mozambique six times; 1982, 1989, 1996, 2004, 2009, 2011
and the Maputo Honor cup twice; 2001-02, 2005.
Ferroviaro have
participated in the CAF Champions League six times and the furthest they
have gone is the Group Stage in 1997. Other performances; 1998 Second
round, 2000-Second round, 2003- First round, 2006- First round, 2009-
Preliminary round.
They have participated in the African Cup of
Champions Clubs Twice, reaching the second round in 1983 and the first
round in 1990.
Their home and away colors are almost similar to
Gor Mahia’s; Green Shirts, white shorts, Green socks at home and an All
white attire with black side stripes on the Shirt.
