The 2011 Hockey season was not a bed of roses for Wazalendo club; They finished at a distant 9th position on the KHU League standings, a flop they majorly attribute to the straight league format previously used.
“Endorsing of the two legged format by the Kenya Hockey Union should have come a long time ago.” Says Wazalendo’s James Owiti who has been a member of the team since year 2000.
“2011 was the worst year for Wazalendo. Straight league was hell for us because the bulk of our players are from colleges. We were forced to play sometimes without our key players as they were held up in lectures or exams. This time round we shall have all Arsenals ready as we have all the time to plan and prepare for the fixtures.” Said Owiti
Using the previous format, a player got a chance to play at most 5 matches the whole season, this is because of commitments and also majorly because matches were played once in every two months.
Wazalendo are currently intensifying their training at their home ground -Highway secondary school and promises to give their best in the coming season, they are assembling their Arsenal and will be challenging for the title. Watch out.
