Telkom vs Strathmore finals

National women hockey Champions Telkom Orange may have some new faces next season, this is according to head Coach Jos Openda who has admitted there is need to inject new blood especially to his team’s forward line.

Openda was speaking on Sunday in Nairobi after his team won their 17th national title albeit after struggling past hard fighting Strathmore University Scorpions in the finals. The two teams drew 2-2 in regulation time and the match had to be settled on shootouts.

The result did not go down well with the veteran coach who said his forward line needs more punch and creativity going into the next season.

“I expected much more from my forward line especially having had a very good finishing form in Africa Club Championships in Zimbabwe. We wasted so many chances in this match and that almost cost us.” He said.

“The important thing for us is that we won the league again and we will work on improving where we observed weaknesses. My main area of concern is our forward line where we will need to bring on board a few creative players for the next season.” He added.

Though he did not mention specific targeted players, Openda said most of their new players will come from the Telkom Young Rovers which is the team’s developmental unit. He also did not rule out any chances of reaching out to other teams for more talents,  “We don’t poach players it’s just that sometimes good players from other teams come to us saying they are tired of being number three or number two. For now however I will not dwell into who we will be recruiting for the next season but all I can assure you is that there will be some major changes in the team especially in the forward line and midfield.”
