South Africa Coach challenges Kenya to invest more in Hockey

South Africa ladies national hockey coach Fabian Gregory has challenged Kenya to invest more in the team to yield greater results. Speaking after guiding his team to come from behind to beat the hosts 3-1 on Monday at the City Park, the tactician noted that Kenya has rich talent that needs more investment to flourish.

The coach who has five players in the team plying their trade in Europe and  five Olympians from last year’s London Olympics games says majority of his team’s  players  are averagely 23 years of age with a bright future in the sport.He has challenged Kenya to use the rich talent towards etting a mark as one of the greatest hockey nations in Africa.

Shelley Russell based in England and Belgium quadruple of  Lisa-Marie Deetlefs, Lilian Duplessis, Jade Mayne and Christine Roos are some of the international assets in the team.

“Going by the manner Kenya played against us on Monday, the team is very young and talented, they dominated us perfectly well. One Keeps wondering what could have happened had they scored couple of goals in the first half.”He said.

“I cannot compare the facilities between the two nations, but I know Kenya too can achieve results by investing more in the sport.” He said.

 The coach said the last time the two teams met in Zimbabwe for the Olympic qualifiers; the crown holders thrashed Kenya 5-0 in the finals.

“Obviously they have improved and this leaves me thinking what will happen had they been playing more international friendly matches.”

Kenya will play Tanzania on Tuesday afternoon with South Africa battling Ghana who mauled Tanzania 18-0 in the opener.
