Police vs USIU

A brace by James Munyi could as well have won Kenya Police the men premier league hockey title as the former champions secured maximum points with a 2-1 win against hard fighting USIU at the City Park on Sunday.

Police now only need a draw against close title challengers Kisumu Simba in a title decider match next week at the same venue to be crowned champions.

Munyi’s final touch on a hard shot in the D beat the impressive Alex Kubasu in the student’s goal for the opening goal after 23 minutes. USIU would then equalize a minute before half time when Bill Olang stumbled on a loose ball to bang beyond Kayieko for a one all half time break.

Police were dominant in the second period pinning USIU in their half area but were wasteful in front of a crowded goal, “This match could have ended with a better score line in our favor but we wasted so many chances. At this stage of the league one needs to take advantage of opportunities and pocket as many goals as possible.” Said Police coach Ken Kaunda.

Police could have paid heavily when complacency at the back in the last two minutes almost cost them dearly with keeper Kayieko drawing out to make a classy save that denied Shabaz Shah at close range in a one on one situation.

Brace scorer Munyi was elated with his team’s form after the match saying they now need all the mental focus they can get to dislodge Simba in the final match in order to be declared champions.

“Winning this match was important for us. We wanted to score more goals but our opponents packed the bus with a defensive type of play perhaps trying to avoid more goals.” He said.

“We now immediately shift our preparations for next weekend because it’s not over yet.’ He adds.
