Kimathi University Captain sets sights on league promotion

Updated on 24/01/12  |    By MICHEZOAFRIKA

The Kimathi University Hockey team captain Fredrick Nyaga says that his team is aiming at gaining promotion into the premier league in the coming season.

The team known as “The Titans”  finished a disappointing fourth last season and missed out on a chance to get promotion to the Hockey Premier League. Kimathi finished behind Kenya Navy and Mombasa Sports Club who finished first and second respectively to gain promotion. Nakuru Club were third.

“Last season, our target was to gain promotion to the premier league. We started well and we were headed in the right direction but we lost our footing towards the end”

“However, this season that is our main aim and we want to work hard and ensure that we are promoted. I believe that we can achieve that because we are training well and with the callibre of players we have, all is possible. We have a lot of work to do and with discipline and hard training, I believe we can”, said the captain.

On Tuesday evening, the team played a friendly against Kagumo teachers college beating them 5-1. The Captain Fredrick Nyaga and John Njoroge grabbed a brace each while lethal striker Simon Mwangi concluded the rout.

The team has also signed a crop of new players whom they hope will be of influence in the new season. Nicliffe Motari, James Juma and Dennis Mawira are some of the players whom the captain banks on to raise the bar in the coming season.

“Juma is a very good midfielder, I watched him play last season for Karate Axiom and I know that he is going to be of importance to us. Motari and Mawira are also very good defenders”, he says.
Others who have been snapped up by the University side include Albert Ocharo, Hosea Taabu, George Kimotho and Felix Odhiambo.

Nyaga also hopes that the team will hold on to the players who will be clearing school this year as they seek to charge up for the premier league.
