Kenya ladies ready for the champions South Africa

Kenya national hockey ladies team will be out to make amends when they face champions South Africa in the opener of the 2013 Africa cup of Nations that serves of at the City Park Stadium in Nairobi on Monday.

The one week tournament will bring  the best of hockey nations in the continent with the top two teams winning berths for next June world cup to be staged at the Hague Netherlands.

Kenya open the campaign against the same opponents (South Africa)  who handed them a 5-0 thumping in the finals of the 2012 Olympics qualifiers held in Zimbabwe. They will play Egypt, Ghana and Tanzania in the other matches.

Head coach Fidhelis Kimanzi acknowledged that it will not  be an easy task playing the champions who are riding on great international exposure and playing the best hockey in Africa.

“We are going out to stamp our authority against the champions. It will not be easy given the manner they play but we have to give our best shot. Being the host team there is no room for failure.”Said the coach

The coach said postponing the tournament which was initially set to kick off in September had a rather negative impact on the team preparation saying the momentum was affected somehow.

“I am not saying we are ill prepared as we stand but the terror attack meant we had to start afresh as far as final preparations are concerned. Nevertheless we are ready to play all the team.” added the coach.

Kenya played a number of friendly matches the last one being an international friendly with Tanzania which ended 2-2 late last week something the coach was cool with.

“The match helped us makes changes and try our players before the championships kicks off. I must say it worked leave alone the scores.”He said.
