Uganda's capital Kampala is set to host the 2013 Hockey Africa Club Championships from the 18th to 24th of January. Kenya’s Telkom Orange will be up to defend their title in the ladies category with Sharkia Hockey Club of Egypt out for their record 22nd title. The two are winners from last year’s edition held in Bulawayo Zimbambwe.

Ghana was poised to host the prestigious club tournament but had to be stripped off hosting rights due to their outstanding debt to the Federations of International Hockey FIH who helped them set up an astro artificial turf a few years back.

The debt was the main reasons the Africa Hockey Federations AFHF stripped the rights of hosting the annual tournament that brings together top two teams in both genders across leagues in the continent.

Lasts year, Kenya was represented by winners Telkom Orange and Strathmore University for ladies with Strathmore University and Kenya Police opting out in the tournament that was held in Zimbabwe.

Kenya and Egypt were the other venues targeted to host the tournament that is usually held in the first week of December but with the Kenya hosting Africa Hockey Cup of Nations this month and Egypt far from stability, Uganda was arrived as a safer bet.

“Kenya cannot host two major events in such a short span. We had to settle for Uganda for the club event that will be held in January 2014. Moving it from December was necessitated by the fact that continental hockey cup of nations was pushed from September to November in Nairobi. “ said AfHF President Ahmed Seif.

Champions Nairobi Simba will be making a comeback to the continental championships having taken over a decade to win the coveted national title. They will be joined by former champions Police.

Women runners up Strathmore University will be making their second appearance at the continental show piece having finished fifth in their debut appearance last year.
