Kenya referee appointed to officiate at the U-20 AFCON

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed first assistant referee Peter Sabatia to officiate at the forthcoming U-20 African Cup of Nations to be hosted in Algeria. The championships will be the 19th edition and will take place in Algeria from March 16 to 30.

The appointment comes just weeks after another Kenyan pair of Sylvester Kirwa and assistant referee Aden Marwa returned from officiating at the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Confirming the appointment, Football Kenya Federation chairman of the technical committee Elly Mukolwe says this is testimony that the standards of officiating in Kenyan soccer are improving. He says the federation is committed towards ensuring they give advanced trainings to the referees especially to refresh them on the advancing laws of the game.

“We are making progressive steps in ensuring we elevate our refereeing standards to be among the best in Africa and the appointments are a good indicator that we are in the right direction.” He says.

Kenya has twelve FIFA accredited referees five of whom are center referees and seven assistant referees. Aden Marwa has also been appointed to officiate at the forthcoming FIFA world Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Burundi and Rwanda have also been given one appointments each for the African Junior championships.
