After 15 years in the Ugandan National team, Ibrahim Sekagya has hung his boots from the national team. The Cranes skipper and Red Bulls Salzburg defender\ stand in skipper retired from the Cranes by e-mail to football organization FUFA.
“I am writing to inform you that I am officially resigning from my position as the captain and player of the Uganda Cranes effective, 1st March, 2012 to give the upcoming young generation a chance to expose their talents,” the e-mail stated.
“I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent hospitality during my work with the Cranes and FUFA as a family. During my stay with the team, I have learnt a lot as regards discipline and teamwork and I am sure these skills have been of great value to me in my career,” he added.
“It has been a great experience and for this reason I appreciate the support the federation has provided me in grooming myself into the successful player I am today,” the flamboyant defender pointed.
Sekagya’s announcement comes a week after left-back Nestroy Kizito also hung his boots from the Cranes squad. This is a blow for the Ugandans as they prepare for to face Congo Brazzaville away in the first round of the 2013 Nations Cup qualifier next Wednesday.
His quitting leaves the likes of Henry Kalungi, Denis Guma, Isaac Isinde and Ivan Bukenya in a tight competition to be Andy Mwesigwa’s partner in the heart of the Uganda defense.
The former skipper has scored six goals for the Uganda Cranes; most notably winning goals in Uganda’s 2-1 win over Nigeria and 1-0 win over Niger in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
