Thiongo’s Empoli out to reclaim top spot

Updated on 17/02/12  |    By JOHN MUNENE

After two weeks  out due to heavy snow in Italy, Paul Thiongo's Empoli youth will be back in action in the National Youth Serie A and B league this Sunday  when they host third placed Sampdoria for their 14th match of the season.

Fourth placed Empoli has had two matches (against Novara and Grosseto) called off this February due to the bad weather in Europe. The club has slipped into fourth position but a win against will push them to second place.

Kenyan midfielder Paul “Zizou” Thiong’o is looking forward to the match and told michezoafrika.com,

“The snow has kept us out of action for the last three weeks but on Sunday we have a chance of catching up with the league leaders. We are mentally focused and ready to challenge for points. Sampdoria is only a place above us (Empoli) and a win will allow us swap places.”

Apart from Thiong’o, other Kenyans playing in Europe e.g. McDonald Mariga and Dennis Oliech have had some of their matches postponed due to bad weather.

The National Youth Serie A and  B  has 42 teams (20 from Serie A and 22 from Serie B) divided into three groups of 14 teams each. Empoli is placed in Group A. Other teams in the same group include:  Fiorentina, Modena Grosseto, Genoa, Novara,Empoli,Sampdoria , Livorno, Juventus, Sassuolo, Siena, Parma Cagliari and Torino.
