Celtic keeps winning, Auxerre falter again

Updated on 22/02/12  |    By JOHN MUNENE

It was mixed fortunes for Kenyans Victor Wanyama and Dennis Oliech in Europe on Wednesday evening. A goal in each half allowed Celtic go 20 points clear of Rangers at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. This was Celtic’s 19th win in a row in the domestic league.

Charles Mulgrew who has been called-up to the Scottish national team set the ball rolling with a wonderful long-range strike in the 33rd minute.

Substitute James Forrest doubled the advantage in the 75th minute to make it three wins in three matches this season  against relegation threatened Dunfermline.

Coach Neil Lennon preferred Ki Sung Yueng over Victor Wanyama in the midfield and the South Korean  did not disappoint as he had a brilliant outing in the 2-0 win.

Caen 2-1 Auxerre

In France, it was another week of misery for AJ Auxerre. A rescheduled match against at v SM Caen ended in a 2-1 defeat.

After a barren first half, Roy Contout gave Auxerre the lead at the stroke of one hour mark. This only lasted for ten minutes as Kandia Traore capitalized on poor defending to slot it a free kick rebound.

Livio Nabab made it 2-0 in the 77th minute to leave Auxerre chasing the game again. The loss will compound misery for Dennis Oliech side as they have not won in their last five outings and sit just a position above relegation zone.

On Wednesday, Oliech who is expected to link up with the national team for the match against Togo played for 83 minutes before paving way for Ben Sahar.
