There is mounting tension in the Kenyan handball family with a section of players and fans calling on the federation secretary Charles ‘Jaji’ Omondi to resign from office with immediate effect.
The boiling revolution cropped after the selection of the final national team set to represent Kenya in the All African games in Maputo early September with the fans and stakeholders blaming the federation of incompetence and bias national team selection.
Accusations and counter accusations have been flying high especially on the federations official facebook page “Kenya Handballers”.The accusations at one point reached boiling point with emotions running high as the officials, fans and players (names withheld) hit out at each other with majority hitting directly at Omondi for incompetence especially on the current Maputo bound team selection.
Among some of the highlights that have caused the uproar within the handball family include: “The biased selection of the final team for the Maputo games, the non payment of allowances for the U-20 team that participated in the Zone 5 games in Rwanda earlier in the year and general poor governance and management of handball in the country.” Amongst other burning issues.
However, Speaking to Michezoafrika.com, the under fire KHF Secretary Charles Omondi denied the allegations leveled against him and instead threw the blame back to the players who have been left out of the national squad for incitement.
“The uproar is as a result of incitement by some players who have not accepted the fact that they have been slashed from the traveling team. We understand that they have been in camp for a long time but by the end of the day, some players had to be dropped and the coaches followed all the selection rules. We were offered 14 slots each for both the men’s and women’s teams and we had to trim down our team to this number by picking the best to represent the country,” Explained Omondi.
On the same note, four international male players are expected to join the teams before the end of the week. Victor Seiro (Germany) and Thodesia Sangoro (Denmark) are already in the country while Bryan Mathews (Denmark) and Finland based keeper Cajitan Ywaya are expected anytime.
