The Nairobi Water ladies handball team began training on Tuesday afternoon at the Nyayo stadium as they prepare for the Kenya Handball Federation 2012/2013 league and the African Club Championship that will take place in Morocco in October.

Nairobi Water finished second in the last season after losing narrowly (27-26) to Cereals ladies team in the finals of the play-offs played in April.

Speaking to michezoafrika.com during their first training session, head coach Jack Ochieng was fully focused to the task ahead and hopes to better their performance in the coming season, “we are looking forward to the start of the league and this time round we are leaving nothing to chance. For the African club championships we hope to gain the exposure since at the competition there are teams of high caliber.”

Nairobi Water is the first team from the East Africa region to attend the African Club Championship and this is a major milestone for the team according to Mary Musau the team manager, “we are happy that we will send a team to represent Kenya in the continental championship and this clearly shows that handball in the country is moving forward.”

There was speculation that the team which has been participating in the national league for the past three years had been disbanded but Musau was quick to rubbish it off, “as you can see the team is intact and even training those are just rumors that are meant to distract us from achieving our goals.”

Most Valuable Player (ladies) in the 2011/2012 season and the team captain Merina Andalla is optimistic that the team will put up a good show as they travel to Morocco, “we have enough time to prepare and also have a depth in the team so am sure we shall have a good performance.”

The team which recruited 2 new players before the start of the league trains every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:00pm at the Nyayo handball court.
