The sports fraternity has been snatched another important official after Hezron Mahero, a handball referee passed away on Sunday evening in hospital. The late Mahero was recuperating in hospital from an accident on Friday in Makuyu, on the Thika-Nanyuki highway that claimed the lives of two basketball referees.

Kenya Handball Federation together with the Kenya Defence Forces Handball League have sent their condolence to the family after the loss.

Speaking on behalf of KHF Charles “Jaji” Omondi described the passing of Mahero as huge loss to the handball community and that the Federation will see what to do in assisting the family, “ the Chairman and the whole of KHF is saddened by the loss of Mahero and we shall do everything possible to assist his family.”

His sentiments were echoed by Sammy Mwangangi the Assistant Secretary of the KDF League who was speaking from Mombasa after the 6th leg of the KDF League who described Mahero as one of the passionate handball lovers in the country.

 “His passion for handball was unquestioned and we have lost a great member of the handball family, the Chairman and the KDF League as a whole would like to send our condolence’s to Mahero’s family. We are ready to give out any support that shall be needed.”

Mahero was headed to the Murang’a Teachers College to officiate in the ongoing College games that were held last weekend. Nine people died on the spot in the accident that involved a 14-seater matatu and a lorry.
