Makongeni wins Nairobi Schools Open Handball tournament

Makongeni high school emerged winners of the Nairobi Schools Open handball tournament that took place over the weekend at the Aga Khan High School after beating Aquinas 25-19 in extra time.

A total of ten teams participated in the tournament 8 of them being boys’ teams while only 2 girls’ teams showed up. Jogoo Road thrashed Huruma girls 11-01 in the finals in what was an easy fixture for the KSSSA 2012 handball finalists.

The boys finals was however a tight match with the champions being held to a 16-16 draw by Aquinas in the normal period but managed to overcome the team they beat in last year’s Nairobi Province handball championship in extra time.

In the semi final matches Makongeni beat the hosts 22-11 while Aquinas beat Eastleigh 18-10. Other teams that participated in the tournament were Moi Forces Academy, Dandora, Olympic and Uhuru Secondary.

Speaking to michezoafrika.com Gabriel Kizito the Nairobi Secondary Schools Handball Association Fixture Secretary and also the coach of New Jogoo Road and Makongeni High Schools said the tournament was to gauge the preparedness of the teams as they approach the Kenya Secondary School ball games that will kick off late next month, “it was a successful tournament and we achieved what we wanted, evaluating the preparedness of the teams so far before our games start next month.”
