The national handball team is calmly sharpening its claws under the technical advice of Danish coach Tony Kjaer ahead of the All African games a the Nyayo national stadium. The teams both men and women have been enjoying the advanced technical training from the experienced coach for the past 25 days and have recorded tremendous technical improvement with the September matches in Mozambique fast approaching.
Kjaer has over 25 years of handball coaching experience and will be in the country for the next four weeks to help in the development of the sport and especially the sharpening of the national team ahead of the Maputo games. He has vast coaching experience having coached other national teams and clubs in Thailand, Argentina, Ghana, Greenland among others.
“The game is developing a lot and Kenya has the potential of becoming the regional best but the teams’ here lack exposure to international matches. They need to get more of these matches to get to the level of North Africa and Angola where handball has a rich history.” Said Kjaer.
Kjaer after a careful analysis of both the mens’ and womens’ team thinks the women’s team has more potential of faster growth and dominance in the region compared to their male counterparts.
“The men’s team may be in a better position in terms of skill but the ladies have outdone them in experience and faster growth. They have represented the country in the previous All African games and I can see them dominating the region for a while. The men’s side has a lot of competition from North Africa but I believe with the right attitude they will beat them soon,” said Kjaer
Currently only 18 players are in camp but 3 more are yet to join including Brain Mathews (centre back) and goalkeeper Cajitan Ywaya who play professional handball in Denmark and Finland respectively.
