As the ongoing Kenya handball league fast approaches its conclusion,
teams are now shifting their focus to preparation for the national
play offs. Charles Omondi the Handball Federation Secretary general
revealed that the top 6 men teams as well as 4 of the women teams will
proceed for the play offs that are expected to kick off in March.
“We
expect the preliminaries to be over by end of February and the top
teams will automatically qualify for the play offs,” said Omondi.
At
the same time, the federation has scheduled a couple of activities
during the month of March, among them holding an international course
for referees and coaches.
A Senegalese international instructor
will conduct the training course that will take place between the 17th
through to 24th of March. During the same period, the federation will
also hold the U-20 national championships for both men and women. This
will take place in Nairobi.
With an objective of improving the
level of the game in the country, Omondi further revealed that World
handball power house Denmark could tour Kenya for a training camp and a
series of coaching clinics this year. Omondi clarified that talks are at
an advanced stage between the Danish Embassy in Kenya and Denmark’s
Handball federation to have the team tour Kenya.
Denmark finished
2nd behind France during the world championships in 2011. At the same
time, both countries have been in good terms with the Europeans offering
their advanced training to the Kenyan teams through their coaches.
In
July last year, the national handball team received technical advice
from Danish coach Tony Kjaer ahead of the All African games that took
place in Maputo, Mozambique.
“We are still in talks with the
Danish Embassy on this issue and we hope our wish to have the training
camp in the country will be successfull,” added Omondi.
