Gunners gunned down

The Gunners Artillery handball team on Sunday went down to Kenya Handball League defending champions National Cereals and Produce Board  men’s team 36 – 15 in the ongoing play-offs at the Nyayo stadium.

In  the semi final match that was interrupted by rains, the army side  played second fiddle throughout the match and by half time they were trailing 20 – 9.
The loss to champions’ means that they are out of the play –offs while Cereals are in the finals enroute to defend their title won last year after a close shave against Ulinzi.

Earlier on Sunday, Gunners drew with Kenya Polytechnic 26 -26 in a match that was resumed on Sunday mroning after rains were a hurdle on Saturday forcing postponement. The result locked out Kenya Polytechnic from the semi finals.

Rains again were a problem in the other semifinal match between Black Mamba and university side Strathmore and the match was abandoned at the 26th minute of the first half. By the time of stoppage, Kaloleni based Black Mamba was leading the students 11 -7. The date of the resumption of the match will be communicated later. There after the finals will be played.

Black Mamba had beaten Gunners 31 -30 to book a place in the semis against the students and it seemed they would avenge their previous defeat against Strathmore had the match not been stopped. In the pool matches Strathmore beat Black Mamba 23 -17.

Speaking to Michezoafrika.com, Mamba head coach Martin Abunde was pleased with his sides performance and a win is what he was expecting when they resume their match against Strathmore,

“ our match against Gunners was a tough one but I am happy that we won’’.

The play offs has seen many complaints about officiating from most coaches but fixture secretary Charles Omondi was quick to respond to the issue ‘’ the referees officiating the matches are all qualified but we must give them time to grow. We cannot always have the same referees over and over’’.

The play offs are running parallel with annual national referees training and the referees attending the course are officiating the play off matches as part of the practical aspect of the training.
