Black Mamba on the move to score

Kaloleni based Black Mamba handball club on Sunday afternoon pulled one of the biggest upsets in the Kenya handball scene after they beat National Cereals and Produce Board 32-31 to win the Kenya Handball Federation league after 18 years.

Black Mamba were runners up in the last 2 seasons and the win has cut short Cereals nine year streak at the helm of the league. The first half of the match saw Cereals take the lead the scores being 16-13 but in a tightly contested second half Black Mamba managed to up the tempo with impressive first breaks. Black Mamba scored 15 goals in the half to take the day while Cereals had 12 goals to relinquish their title.

Paul Ondara who was influential for Black Mamba throughout the match scored 10 goals followed by Fredrick Odhiambo with 5 goals while Cereals winger Davies Odhiambo gave his side 9 goals followed by James Sagala who scored 7 goals.

Speaking to Michezoafrika.com Martin Abunde the Black Mamba coach was overwhelmed by the win as they did not expect to win, “we knew that we would have a very tough match but honestly I did not expect us to win. Taking the league after so long is such a wonderful thing and I thank God.”

Cereals are the Defending East and Central Champions and the loss to Black Mamba comes as huge surprise to many.
