Kenya’s neighbors Uganda and Tanzania are the new nations to make entry to the 2011 Tusker Malt Golf Carnival as the tournament unveils its vision of going regional. The carnival which was launched in 2009 initially featured two nations of Kenya and Rwanda.
On Thursday morning, organizers of the event announced rapid plans to expand the regional tournament to include over 40 golf clubs across East Africa. The bulk of the championships will be hosted across 16 venues in Kenya with members of the 39 golf clubs participating from September 2011 through 2012.
Speaking on Thursday morning at the Railways golf club in Nairobi, the Tusker Marketing manager for Kenya Ken Kareithi assured that the tournament seeks to take a regional brand and the inclusion of the two new countries is a welcome development towards growing the sport.
“The 2011 Tusker Malt golf carnival will be a regional affair, hosted in various golf clubs from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. We are expecting to register over 10,000 golfers, a double number from 4500 who participated in the 2009 edition,” explained Kareithi.
East African Breweries Limited through its Tusker Malt brand will offer sponsorship worth KSH 30 million which will be used in organizing the events, advertising and publicizing the tournament.
The golfers are advised to play in pairs in what is referred as the FOUR BALL BETTER BALL format. This format is widely used in the international competition including the Africa Amateur Golf championships and the Ryder cup.
The 2011 tusker malt golf carnival will kick off at the railways golf club this weekend (24th September) before moving to the Machakos Golf Club, the Njoro country club, the Thika sports club and Vet Lab Sports club.
Events in other regional Countries will tee off in November and December.
