KQ golf series ends this weekend

The Kenya Airways Golf series will on Saturday 25th February hold the tournament’s grand finale in Nairobi (Windsor Hotel) as the 2011/2012 season tee’s down.The tournament that took place in different countries across Africa as well as Asia and USA, saw over 3000 golfers participate in the one of the most popular golf series in the continent, a raise from 1000 in the previous season.

Nevertheless, before the grand finale on Saturday, the players will be involved in curtain raiser action beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) through to Friday for a 3 day tournament before the main action scheduled for Saturday.

On Friday, the 30 professional players who have confirmed participation will then play against amateur golfers. This will be the 1st tournament ever where amateurs and professionals will be playing together. At the same time, all winners from the tournaments held within and without the country are invited to take part in the grand tournament.

To ice up the event, major tournament sponsors, Kenya Airways on Tuesday morning presented a KSH 1, 000,000 cheque as prize money for the competition’s winner. Mwaniki Gachoka chairman of the Kenya Golf Union expressed his gratitude to the sponsor citing that KQ has come a long way to improving the game in Kenya whereby the players are getting rewarded handsomely a move that is working as a motivation to the players.

Chairman of the professional golfers of Kenya (PGK) Charan Thethy also welcomed the idea of the week’s long tournament which will act as training session for the golf players ahead of the Kenya Open which is just 5 weeks away.

“We will gladly take part in the KQ golf series event which will help us greatly in our preparations ahead of the Kenya Open action,” he said

The entire 2011/2012 series saw 35 tournaments played in 17 countries including Egypt in North Africa, Cameroon in Central Africa and Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal in West Africa. In the Southern Africa, the tournament penetrated into Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa as well as the Island nation of Seychelles. East Africa hosted the tournaments in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya.
