Kenya Airways will participate in sponsoring the 43rd edition of the Barclays Kenya open Golf tournament scheduled for 31st March - 2nd April at the Muthaiga golf club in capacity of the official airliner. This was unveiled on Wednesday morning at the Muthaiga golf club in Nairobi.

As the official airline of this tournament, Kenya airways will offer special fares to the professional golfers flying in for the scheduled tour from anywhere across the world. The air tickets sponsorship, which is worth Kshs. 2.2 million, will also cater for the PGA officials and organizers who will be supervising and managing the tournament.

“Kenya airways will extend its sponsorship to the airport by ensuring a welcome team will be set up to meet and assist the golfers at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport. This will make the visiting golfers feel welcome and well taken care of both onboard and on ground and further enhance the image of Kenya Airways and the country,” assured Nita Nagi the Kenya airways area manager.

Nagi further added that Kenya airways had identified sports tourism as a key area of growth and in particular golfing holidays and tourism since Kenya has very many beautiful golf courses.

“Globally golf earns 26 billion dollars annually and Kenya stands a good chance to get a slice of the pie.” She said.

This is the first time Kenya airways will be partnering with the Kenya open golf limited and will work with Barclays bank which announced a 3 yr partnership with the Kenya open golf limited under a total budget of 13 million shillings late last year.

The tournament is expected to attract approximately 150 golfers from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Egypt, Uganda, Rwanda and Swaziland with Kenya having the majority representation of 20 players.

Kenya Airways has also donated a business class ticket to be raffled during the 4 day event, proceeds of which will go towards the organization of golf tournament.

However despite the large amount of money set aside for the tournament, the Kenya open golf limited representative Mr. Sam Ndegwa sensitized that they could be straining financially and urges other corporate companies to extend their sponsorship to the annual tournament.

“We are glad to host this annual event but we urge other corporate companies to partner with us in order to move this sport to greater heights,” said Ndegwa
