Crown Paints have come on board to sponsor the Kenya Amateur Match Play Championships to be held at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club from June 19-22.They came on board with Ksh250,000.

Speaking while presenting the sponsorship cheque to KGU Chairman  Francis Okwara, Crown Paints CEO Rakesh Rao noted the important role played by the Kenya Amateur Match Play championships in nurturing golf talents in the country.

“We are proud to be associated with the golfing event which has produced some of the finest golfers in Kenya. My company has been a keen supporter of golf and our sponsorship of this event is testimony to our commitment to fostering the development of the sport.” Rao noted.

Rao also said that his company has the obligation of helping the winner of the championships in reaching his dreams that will include a trip to South Africa and a ticket to next year's Kenya Open Golf championships to be held in march.

“We intend to have such championships held regionally that is Arusha, Kampala and Rwanda in the next two years. For now we have to help the winner reach his potential and make him our brand ambassador for next year Kenya Open Championships.” He added.

On his part, Okwara thanked Crown for sponsoring the tournament adding the year’s edition is expected to be the most competitive.

“Some of the top Amateur golfers will be vying for this year's title. If last year’s tournament is anything to go by, we expect tight competition.” He said. Among those expected to compete for the top prize will be Willy Kitata who is the Uganda champion.

Match Play Championships are organized by KGU and is one of the oldest and most prestigious championships in the country. It dates back to 1928 when it was incepted at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club and is hosted by various golf clubs in the country on a rational basis

The Championships which are played as a five round knockout tournament have always attracted top amateur golfers in the country and is limited to 64 players boasting handicap 9 and better.
