Likoni Community Football League, transforming lives

Born in May 2011 out of the desire to give children a chance to play, Likoni Community Football league has grown over the last 2 years to serve over 2000 kids, with 36 boys' teams and 2 girls' teams in U12,U14 and U16 taking part in the just concluded season 5.

Speaking to one of the founding member and programs coordinator Kevin Odhiambo said the league is currently on recess in time for the Holy month of Ramadhan. However, they are concentrating efforts working through schools to increase the rate of the girl child participation.

"It is true that we initially wanted just to give a child and opportunity to play but this has since changed as we realized there are too many challenges within our community that we needed to address and sports offers an excellent vehicle to convey this message to the community in Likoni.

It is disheartening to note that Likoni has been the epicenter of most of the social ills in the large Mombasa county, drug and substance abuse, early marriages, teenage sexual involvement and post Election violence just to mention but a few" Odhiambo continued. "With this in mind we have since broadened our vision to educate our community especially the critical mass of the young people and there is no better way than to use the universal language of sports."

The league adapts themed seasons and the just concluded season 5 was dubbed “Peace and Security, ni Jukumu langu” a message to love one another and for peaceful election was emphasized during this time. Coaches meticulously plan to embed chosen messages in their technical coaching sessions. Season 6 is themed to address HIV and AIDS with a lot of emphasis of "Getting to zero Infections and Having a HIV free generation".

Like many community based programs LCFL has had a myriad of challenges of support and the founding Director Ben Levey encourages local business people, companies individual and the government step in and help in raising much needed funds to take Likoni Community Football League towards achieving their goals!
