Kenya's Evelyne Watta wins CNN award

Kenya’s Evelyn Watta is the new CNN Multichoice African Sports Journalist of the Year. She scooped the top award in Dare salaam last weekend to join the growing list of celebrated Kenya’s Sports journalists whose works have been recognized internationally for journalism excellence.

With her comprehensive article on the Senegalese wrestling heritage, Watta of was among the 28 finalists selected for the annual prestigious award held in Dare salaam.

In her acknowledgement statement after receiving the award, Watta said, “Sports is the winner. I thank my colleagues for walking with me through this sporting journey. Truly nothing is more fun than doing what people say you can't do,” she said. 

Watta recently covered the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and has also covered two Summer Olympics, Youth games, World Athletics championships and Africa Cup of nations.

She is the acting secretary general of AIPS and treasurer of Sports Journalists Association of Kenya SJAK.

Another Kenyan Joseph Mathenge was declared the overall winner of 2014 CNN Multichoice Journalist of the year award for his photography during the 2013 Westgate Mall attacks.

Anne Mawathe and Rashid Ibrahim also won in the investigative category.

The ceremony was graced by Jakaya Kikwete the president of Tanzania who called for media freedom across the continent.
