The government is to lay plans for the construction a world standard stadium before 2019 in bid to host World Athletics Championships.

The Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Art and Culture Dr. Hassan Wario says his ministry is committed in ensuring that sports in the country are improved since it is a source of employment to many youth and can be tapped as a source of tourism attraction.

Dr. Wario says that consultations are underway for the construction of a world stadium that can hold world international events before 2019. Dr. Wario adds that the government is going to renovate and upgrade five local stadiums to national status and complete the unfinished ones. Some of the stadiums given priority are Nyeri, Eldoret, Kisumu, Nakuru and Mombasa.

“I am going to do consultation with the relevant personnel so that we work out plans of constructing a world stadium. We are also concerned about our local and national stadiums and as a ministry we are going to work out ways to ensure that incomplete stadiums are completed.

“As you understand we have only one stadium that is Moi Sports Center Kasarani that has high capacity and can host big international events”. He added.

The minister also added that they are going to improve and equip facilities of the local stadiums to promote sports especially athletics and football.
