Chris Froome edged out his immediate rival Alberto Contador to win stage 17 of the 100th Tour de France and extended his overall lead. The Kenyan borne and Britain citizen started slower than Contador on first part of the 20-mile course from Embrun to Chorges in the French Alps but gained momentum in the final minutes to finish nine seconds ahead of the Spaniard to clinch his third stage win of the race.

Rui Costa produced a confident ride in stage 16 of the Tour de France to beat the Briton Chris Froome who finished 29 but retained his place as overall leader.

Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez finished the stage(17) in third place, 10 seconds behind Froome and Dutchman Bauke Mollema who finished second place overall in most stages dropped to fourth .

Tour de France 100th edition has four more stages to go.
