Basilua Makola stepped off the bench to score a last minute winner for Congo’s Vita Club as the team progressed to the Semis of the CECAFA Kagame Cup with a 2-1 win over Burundi’s Atletico.

In a match slowed down by the hot Dar Es Salaam afternoon heat, both teams did not show much activity upfront as they chose to slow down the pace of the game to reserve strength for the entire 90 minutes.

Vita showed the early intentions to score and in the 6th minute, tournament top scorer Etakiama Taddy showed just why he is the best finisher in the tournament with a shot from inside the box after poor defense from the Atletico side.

The Burundians were slowed down by the goal but that did not deter their determination. In the 33rd minute, Claude Nahimana unleashed a shot that nearly caught keeper Nelson Lukong off with a slight bounce on his face, but he was able to tip it over for a corner.

In the second half, Atletico knew they only had 45 minutes to sound a reply and they wasted no time with Pierre Kwizera’s powerful volley just two minutes after restart .

Neither of the two teams struggled to create more chances as they chose to play possessive , cautious of making mistakes.

Basilu then broke the hearts of the Atletico side who were just awaiting for the referee’s whistle for full time in the final minute of added time. The substitute tapped in from a cross on the right by the first goal scorer Etakiama to send the invitational side to the Semis.
