The Kenya Deaf Basketballers ‘King Deaf’ has pitched camp at Nyayo National stadium to finalize on their preparations for the African deaf Olympic qualifiers which will be hosted in Nairobi from 21st to 26th February that will be held in Kenya for the first time will see host compete against Mali and Nigeria for that sole ticket for the 2013 Paralympics’ that will be staged in Budapest, Hungary.
The organizers have invited Uganda and Tanzania teams that are yet to confirm if they will take part in the tournament so as to boost the level of competition, though they will only compete as guest teams. Nigeria are favorites’ in the event which will be played at the Nyayo stadium .Nigerian s are more experienced and boasts of seasoned players unlike the Kenyans who will be making their maiden debut in the qualifiers.
The team coach Charles Goro said that “We expect teams like Nigeria who have been in the championship for so long to perform well.”
Goro has been guiding the team through their paces and remains optimistic that Kenya can pull an upset. The Kenyan camp however has to adjust and try to work out with a myriad of challenges from lack of enough training gears, balls and even commuting expenses from their residential base at the YMCA.
