2012 KBF Classic League Defending champions Co-op Bank managed a narrow 57-53 win over Ulinzi Warriors at the Nyayo Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon as the league resumed this weekend.

The Kenya Defence Forces side kicked off the 1st quarter on a high note getting 13 points after 7 minutes of play while the Bankers had 3 points courtesy of a Salim Ali 3 pointer. In a quick response to the Ulinzi onslaught Titus Musembi and Joseph Khaemba put Co-op back into the game by each sinking a 3 pointer to put the scores at 9-13 after 8 minutes of play. The duo could have pushed the Bankers to overtake their opponents but missed a couple of open chances and the quarter ended 13-15 in favor of Ulinzi.

The 2nd quarter saw Co-op continue with their rejuvenated form despite a series of ball handling errors by both sides and they managed to get 15 points of which 4 came from Musembi’s two steals. Ulinzi who seemed to lose concentration in form of the many turn overs they had in the quarter, settled for 6 points and this put the half time scores at 28-21 in favor of Co-op.

After the break Ulinzi put to use the half time pep talk and they came out guns blazing in the 3rd quarter with a series of well thought out plays and they overwhelmed Cary Odhiambo’s side with 17 points against 12 points. Despite Ulinzi claiming the quarter, Co-op still led in terms of total points the scores being 40-38.

In the last quarter the two teams were neck to neck but it was the Bankers who emerged top with 17 points to ensure they took the 2 league points while Ulinzi had 15 points in the quarter. Cliff Ochieng was Co-op’s top scorer with 15 points to his name followed by Musembi who had 14 points. Joseph Ngoshi and Antony Bwire stood out for Ulinzi with 15 and 11 points respectively.

In another match played at the same venue Strathmore University had an easy time when they thrashed Blazers 73-41. The match saw Strathmore take all four quarters (21-15, 17-14, 20-5 and 15-7) with Joseph Owino being the students’ top scorer with 17 points. Abel Nson was the match’s top scorer with 23 points that he got for Blazers.

The league resumes on Sunday.
