USIU vs Eagle Wings

2012 KBF Classic league defending champions , Eagle Wings, had a close 64-63 win against last year’s runners up USIU Flames on Sunday afternoon at the Nyayo Gymnasium  in a tight nerve cracking action that could have gone either side. The two teams met again last season during the finals of the play offs with Eagle Wings emerging champions.

The first half of the match had seen Kenya International, Samba Mjomba give the students a hard time with a series of 3 pointers that supported a 16-10 first quarter win.

But the flames never flickered as they came back in the second quarter blazing with a series of super moves. The never aging  Hilda Indasi was in good form in this quarter supporting her team to a  14-11 win as the half time scores stood at 27-24 in favor of Smart Olumbo’s side.

It was during the first half of the match that Mjomba ,who was just returning from Injury, was victim once more when she fell awkwardly and had to sit out for the rest of the match.

The 3rd quarter was a more balanced matchup despite Eagle Wings’ power forward Silalei Shani dominating in terms of rebounds both in defence and offence. Both teams were equal on points ending the third on 11-11.

Flames pushed Eagle Wings to the limit in the final stretch and with 23 seconds to go the scores were at 61-59,the champs still leading. Eagle Wings’ Annerose Atieno made sure of the two free throws awarded after a foul pushing the scores to 63-59 with 17 seconds to the buzzer.

Flames who were determined to take the match into overtime or better win it responded immediately through Indasi who hit a three pointer with 6 seconds to go putting the scores at 64-62, but even after being awarded a free throw which they converted it was not enough as Eagle Wings took the win with a single point advantage.

Indasi emerged the match’s top scorer with 19 points for USIU while Angela Akoth and Shani put their name in the score sheet with 17 and 11 points respectively.

In other ladies matches played at the same venue, Safe Spaces had a 53-21 over Mennonites while Co-op Bank beat visiting NYTA-Shimba Hills 66-42.
