Somali born Briton and world reigning 5000m champion Mo Farah recently launched his Mo Farah foundation in his homeland Somalia with an aim of aiding the hunger stricken people in the East African country.
According to his official website mofarahfoundation.co.uk, the crisis facing the Horn of Africa is a recurring issue of which is very close to the athlete’s heart and as a result he founded and created the Mo Farah Foundation.
The Foundation is committed to providing aid to those most in need in the immediate short term and foreseeable future. Learning the issue at hand, the foundation’s short term aid objectives are to supply essential lifelines such as maize, cereal and drinking water while the long term objective is aimed at providing and maintaining community water wells, crop seeds for agricultural farming and the tools to sustain this essential way of life.
Over 60 million people in East Africa have been affected by the worst drought to hit the region in over 60 years with the hardest hit areas being Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. Therefore, the athlete’s ambition is to help save lives of the dying nation.
Mo Farah who relocated to UK at the age of 8 from a war torn Somalia has gradually grown to a strong long distant runner and becoming the new challenge on the tracks for Kenyan athletes after he recently clinched the 5000m gold medal as well as the 10,000m silver in the world championships in Daegu, South Korea.
The athlete who spent 2 months of training in Kenya is now setting his focus at the world indoor championships set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey next month before making a grand appearance in the London Olympics later in July where he will be expected to write history in his own country.
