Just like many other Kenyan Athletes taking part in spring season activities as their personal practice sessions, Augustine Choge is also not taking any chances with 164 days to go to the 2012 London Olympics fiesta. Over the weekend, the middle and long distant runner topped in the 3000m race during Internationales Hallenleichtathletik Meeting (IHM) in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Choge fought competition from fellow Kenyan Edwin Soi who closely sprinted with him throughout the last lap only to lose in micro seconds. Choge touched the line in 7:29:94. The win was a redemption moment for the Kenyan who fell to Britain’s Mo Farah in the 1500m race during the Glasgow meeting in the previous weekend.
Choge and Soi outdid race favorite Yenew Alamirew, took third in 7:31.23. Choge’s time marked the 10th place all-time for the indoor 3000m race.
Choge’s promising ability was 1st discovered back in 2003 when he featured in the IAAF world cross country championships where he finished 4th in the junior category. He later set the 5000m world record in 2005 and claimed the gold medal in the commonwealth games in 2005 over the same distance.
However, he has now shifted concentration to the 1500m race category and was among the Kenyan team of runners who broke the 4*1500m relay record which stands at a time of 14:36:23 minutes.
