Bareto's brilliance propels Malindi FC in Copa

Updated on 11/04/11  |    By WANJIKU MWENDA

The Copa Coca Cola tournament was played in 9 different counties the past weekend as massive action and talent was exhibited in Machakos, Narok, Kisumu, Taita Taveta, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Bungoma, Busia and Kilifi  but it was the Alaskan Grounds in Malindi that turned ablaze with impressive show from the youthful talent.

Malindi United’s top scorer Mudhafar Bareto emerged the man of the weekend as he spearheaded his team to 2 straight victories as the Copa Coca Cola tournament entered its 4th week.

The first match saw Bareto score within the first 5 minutes while his second goal came just five minutes later to the frustration of their opponents Magarini. In the 2nd half of the game, Bareto grabbed a hat-trick for his team but to counter attack their lead Karisa Charo of Magarini scored the team’s only goal ending the game 3-1.

The 2nd game poised same challenges for Malindi united as Barani showcased strong defending tactics but later succumbed to Malindi with Bareto scoring the lone goal 10 minutes into the game.

In the girls category, Kilifi Mixed School carried the day as they battered Barani Girl’s 8-1 in a one sided match.

By half time, Maureen Yaah had awarded her side a hat trick while her fellow team mate Margaret Njuga added the 4th goal to rub salt in the already painful wound for the Barani girls.

The match’s 2nd half was not at all reassuring for Barani Girls as Kilifi Mixed netted another three goals by Betty Charo and Beatrice Salama by the 50th minute. However, Barani managed to earn themselves a consoling goal when they scored their first goal in the 60th minute. However, Beatrice Salama reasserted her team’s intentions in the last few minutes of the game by scoring the 8th goal.

Later in their 2nd match, not much seemed to change as Barani Girls received a 2nd dose of defeat from Furaha Ladies who thrashed them 6-0. Furaha Ladies met their equal however when they played against Kilifi Mixed School in an explosive game that ended 3-1 in favor of Kilifi.

Games continue next weekend in the following counties:  Nairobi, Kitui, Nandi, Embu and Migori.
