Inspirational Sofapaka captain James Situma jetted out of the country at 2.50 AM this morning to link up with his new side KF Tirana in Albania. On arrival at his new base,Sitima will relax for one day before undergoing a medical test on Tuesday. If he passes the medical,Situma will sign a lucrative two year contract later in the day that will make him the first Kenyan to play in the Albanian Superliga.
Joining him in his connecting flight was top Bahrain play maker Mahmood Alajmi who is also set to join the Albanian Superliga’s most decorated club.
Harambee Stars coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno had named Situma in the squad to face Sudan in an LG Cup match this weekend but will now have to find a suitable replacement for the utility player.
Speaking to michezoafrika.com at the airport shortly before boarding the plane, Situma thanked God for the opportunity, his Kenyan fans for supporting his career, his fellow Sofapaka players for contributing towards his achievement and the President for giving him a chance to expose his talent.
“I thank God for this chance and I promise to put in my best. Every footballer dreams to play in major leagues and am excited to get a chance to play outside for the first time.” He said
At KF Tirana, Situma will be coached by Ex Juventus and former Fabio Capello assistant coach Giancarlo Corradini.
FC Tirana is the most successful and most popular club in Albania's soccer history. The club was founded on 1920 and plays its home matches at the Qemal Stafa stadium. They last won the Domestic league in 2008-2009 season. They won the Albanian Cup this year.
KF Tirana is ranked behind Portsmouth in the IFFHS Europe club ranking of the last decade at position 17 and last featured in the UEFA Champions League in 2009 and the Europa cup in 2010.
With Humphrey Mieno also set for Tunisian side Club Africain, Sofapaka could be soon shopping for upcoming talents to fill up the gaps left. The club will visit Sudan early next month for a friendly match which could see the club parting with three more players to the host club Al Hilal.
