Kenyan International Allan Watende Wanga made a dream debut for his new club, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), when he scored the consolation goal against Da Nang in Vietnam's professional league dubbed V-League on Saturday at the Chi Lang Stadium. The match was part of V-League 2011 season kickoff and was attended by an estimated 10,000 fans.
The former KPL top scorer, Wanga, played the whole match and partnered with Brazilian striker Evaldo Rodrigues upfront. The first half ended scoreless with both teams reserving their best attacking football for the second half.
Da Nang was the first to score courtesy of a Hernandes goal in the 74th minute. Two minutes later Wanga announced his arrival with a superb goal that helped his club restore parity.
Wanga’s goal however ended up as a consolation as Da Nang won a penalty and scored again in the 81st minute through Argentine forward Sebastian Merlo. Despite persistent efforts to equalise, HAGL‘s Thai midfielder Sakda Joemdee saw red in the 84th to compound misery for the visiting side.
Wanga last featured for Kenya during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda in Nairobi, a game that ended in a scoreless draw. He graced the highly competitive Kenyan Premier League last season turning out for former champions Sofapaka after a stint with Azerbaijani side FC Baku. He has also featured in the Angolan League for Petro de Luanda.
In December last year, he signed a two year contract with the Vietnam side. HAGL finished in a respectable fifth place in last season’s V-League.
The top team in the 14 team league qualifies for the premier Asian club football competition -AFC Champions League.
